
The Grandmaster of the Bujinkan Hatsumi Yoshiaki was born 2'nd December 1931 in Noda (Just North of Tokyo); he later changed his first given name to Masaaki. His father introduced him to Kendo when he was 7 years old. He also studied Judo and Karate. In Junior High School he was a gymnast, boxer and the Captain of the soccer team.
At the age of 26, Hatsumi Sensei met Takamatsu Toshitsugu in Kashiwabara City west of the Iga region in Japan. He traveled across the main island of Honshu every weekend for fifteen years to study with Takamatsu Sensei who lived in Kashiwabara, a half day train ride away from his own home in Noda. After 15 years of studying, his teacher, Takamatsu Sensei died in his home in Nara (just East of Osaka) on April 2, 1972.
Takamatsu Sensei had already decided a few years earlier that
Hatsumi Sensei would be the next sole inheritor and "soke" or
grandmaster of 9 classical schools Since then he has received
numerous awards and recognition from all over the world including
commendations from U.S. Presidents, Recognition awards from
military elite Award for cultural exchange in 1999 from a member
of the Japanese Imperial family and the Papal award in 2000.
In addition he has also released several books in both Japanese
and English and released an excellent series of training videos,
which encompasses well over 50 volumes. He has been an advisory
and fight choreographer for numerous films and Television programs.
